Russia-Ukraine Tensions Rise

 In Event News

Over the past few days, heavy shelling has increased along the tense line of contact between Ukrainian forces and the separatists backed by Russia in Ukraine’s industrial heartland of Donbas. The conflict began after Russia’s annexation of Crimea and has claimed at least 14,000 lives.

On Tuesday evening, the Ukrainian government troops fired several shells at areas surrounding the village of Zaichenko in the south of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said Monday that Russia has amassed 147,000 troops around Ukraine, including 9,000 in Belarus. The continued deployment of the Russian forces in Belarus raised concerns that Russia could send those troops to sweep down on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, a city of 3 million less than a three-hour drive from the Belarusian border.
