Canada public weather alerts datasets from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) are now available in EigenPrism. The availability of this dataset from ECCC will help EigenPrism users in enhancing their event response preparedness for severe weather perils in Canada. EigenPrism users can make use of these datasets in various forms.

What Perils are Covered by the Canadian Weather Alerts Datasets in EigenPrism?

These datasets cater to a wide range of weather phenomena, ensuring that EigenPrism users receive timely warnings to mitigate risks and prepare accordingly as soon as they are available from the ECCC.

It’s crucial to note that ECCC provides periodic public weather alerts are classified as warnings, watches, and advisories based on the severity and timing of the event. For our purposes, we focus solely on “Warnings” indicating forecasted events.

Peril Details Description
Windstorm Tropical Storm Warnings A tropical storm warning is issued by ECCC when coastal winds caused by an approaching tropical cyclone are expected to be between 63 and 117 km/hr. For more information please visit: https://weather.gc.ca/
Severe Thunderstorm Severe Thunderstorm Warnings A severe thunderstorm warning is issued by ECCC if one or more of the following conditions are met: winds are expected to gust at 90 km/hr. or greater, hail with a diameter of 2cm. or greater is expected, and/or heavy rainfall is expected. Heavy rainfall is defined differently in each province and territory. Tornado Warnings A tornado warning is issued by ECCC when a tornado has been reported or when there is evidence based on radar or from a reliable spotter that a tornado is imminent. For more information please visit: https://weather.gc.ca/
Winter Storm Snowfall Warnings A snowfall warning is issued by ECCC for a region when 10 or more cm of snow falls within 12 hours or less. For more information about threshold criteria please visit: https://weather.gc.ca/
Blizzard Warnings A blizzard warning is issued by ECCC for an area when winds of 40 km/hr or greater are expected to cause widespread reductions in visibility to 400 metres or less, due to blowing snow, or blowing snow in combination with falling snow. Freezing Drizzle Warnings A freezing drizzle warning is issued by ECCC for an area when a period of freezing drizzle is expected for at least eight hours. For more information please visit: https://weather.gc.ca/
Freezing Rain Warnings A freezing rain warning is issued by ECCC for an area when freezing rain is expected to pose a hazard to transportation or property or when freezing rain is expected for at least 2 hours (4 hours for locations in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Magdalen Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador). Snow Squall Warnings A snow squall warning is issued by ECCC for an area when there is a brief period (less than one hour) of very poor visibility (400 m or less), caused by heavy snow and blowing snow, and accompanied by strong, gusty winds of 45 km/h or greater, is expected to occur with the passage of a cold front. Winter Storm Warnings A winter storm warning is issued by ECCC for an area when severe and potentially dangerous winter weather conditions are expected, including: A major snowfall (25 cm or more within a 24 hour period); and A significant snowfall (snowfall warning criteria amounts) combined with other cold weather precipitation types such as: freezing rain, strong winds, blowing snow and/or extreme cold. Arctic Outflow Warnings An arctic outflow warning is issued by ECCC for an area when any combination of wind speed and temperature giving a wind chill of -20 or lower for 6 hours or more. For more information please visit: https://weather.gc.ca/

EigenPrism users can set Alerts on the ECCC data sets on their exposure. They will automatically get a notification if their assets are located within the perimeter of the forecasted event.

Subsequently, users can visualize the assets in context of the event taking advantage of EigenPrism’s Geo visual analytics capabilities. Users can also slice and dice or delve into the details of the associated assets.
