International Shakeout Day 2022

 In Blog

International Shakeout Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of October every year, with the goal of educating the public about the significance of immediate action in the event of an earthquake. This day helps to educate common people about precautions and practices against earthquakes. It was initiated on November 13, 2008, after the success of The Great Southern California ShakeOut, the first-ever ShakeOut exercise, which was held in California as part of efforts to raise awareness of earthquake safety in the highly seismic state.

Every year, earthquakes claim thousands of lives and inflict billions of dollars’ worth of damage. As per reports from FEMA, earthquakes cost $6.1 billion in economic damage annually. Everybody should be aware of how to be safe during an earthquake. Therefore, millions of people participate in earthquake preparedness drills every year.

What should EigenPrism® users do on ShakeOut day?

  • Run the USGS full shakeout scenario (M 7.8 Southern California) on your exposure: v3 | v4
  • Now’s a good time to review your alerts settings and ensure that the alerts settings for earthquakes are on: v3 | v4
  • Open the event set USGS Earthquake Planning Scenario MMI Shakemaps and find other planning scenarios relevant to your exposure. Here are instructions on how you can run EigenRover in v3 to automatically surface these scenarios (coming soon to v4!).
