Floods and heavy rain have wreaked havoc in Saudi Arabia, prompting road closures, school cancellations, and structural damages in some places as meteorological authorities issue travel warnings. Footage circulating on social media shows flash floods inundating the provinces of Al-Ula and Madinah on Monday, with further deluges sweeping through Riyadh on Wednesday, bringing life to a standstill in the desert Gulf.

Schools shut down, cars were partially submerged in standing water, and many structures were damaged due to flooding in the central region of Qassim, which is currently considered one of the hardest-hit areas.

Saudi Arabia’s National Meteorological Centre issued red alerts for Qassim, Riyadh, and Medina province, warning of heavy rain with strong winds, reduced visibility, hail, torrential downpours, and thunderstorms.

The recent deluge follows a series of heavy rains that hit the region in mid-April, killing 21 people in Oman and four in the UAE, which experienced its heaviest rainfall in 75 years. A storm accompanied by lightning and strong winds brought over 50 millimeters (2 inches) of rain to various areas. This led to flooding in parts of Dubai, a crucial financial hub in the UAE.
