Coastal Flooding, Massive Waves – Winter Storm Riley
Winter Storm Riley intensified into a powerful nor’easter on March 2, bringing high winds combined with heavy snow to the northeast region. Coastal flooding caused significant damage and at the height of the storm, more than two million homes and businesses were without power. The storm also hindered travel, both on the ground and in the air.
States of emergency were declared in Massachusetts, Maryland, New York and Virginia.

Winter storm Riley strengthened due to the ‘bombgenesis’ weather phenomenon, which describes a rapidly developing storm resulting from a drop in atmospheric pressure of at least 24 millibars. The northeast region experienced this same effect in January when Winter Storm Grayson delivered forceful winds and snow with freezing temperatures.
