US Faces Continued Flash Flooding Threats, From Texas to Florida

 In Event News

As Texas and Louisiana recover from a wet weekend, the threat of flooding remains. Several rivers in the region are currently under flood warnings and severe thunderstorm watch, which are expected to persist throughout the week. Over 13 million people, including those in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, face the risk of severe weather. New Orleans, Lake Charles, and Mobile may experience rainfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour.

As the weakening cold front dissipates over the western Gulf Coast, the locus of heavy rain and severe storms shifts towards Florida for Monday. Although the intensity of thunder and hail storms decreased by Sunday, the risk of heavy rainfall remains. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather, affecting areas from Gainesville to Tampa and Orlando to Ft. Lauderdale.

Furthermore, due to an active El Niño, at least 45 water level gauges along rivers and tributaries in the lower Mississippi Valley and the Southeast have reached flood stage, leading to a notably wet beginning of the year for areas like Atlanta, New Orleans, and Tallahassee, Florida.
