Super Typhoon Rai Hammers Philippines with Flooding Rainfall and Landslides
Super typhoon Rai, locally known as Odette, hammered the Philippines Archipelago on Thursday, causing power outages, uprooting trees and significant damage to property. Rai is the 15th typhoon to hit Philippines this year and the strongest one so far. It weakened from a Category 5 to Category 3 storm after making landfall on the Siargao Island on Thursday. On its track, it hit several highly populated areas, including Cebu, a city with a population of nearly 1 million.
The storm system initially measured winds up to 160 mph with gusts over 185 mph, and later tracked west bringing flooding rainfall and landslides. As per the reports, Super Typhoon Rai will remain strong for another 24 hours. It will gradually start moving away from the Philippines on Friday and into Vietnam and China’s Hainan province, where it will spread rainfall during the weekend. However, the impact is not expected to be significant.
