Severe Storms and Flooding Ravage Southeast Queensland

Queensland’s southeast is facing severe storms, leading to widespread flooding and prompting the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) to issue warnings for more heavy rain. Samford Valley was particularly hard hit, receiving 300mm of rain in three hours, while Upper Caboolture experienced 126mm in two hours.

Flood warnings are in effect for large parts of central and southeast Queensland, with flood watches also issued for western Queensland, central and southeast areas of the state, and northeast NSW. Queensland Premier Steven Miles has cautioned residents, especially in Moreton Bay, about the likelihood of persisting severe conditions.

The BoM warns that the ongoing rainfall could result in flash or riverine flooding over the next 48 hours, posing risks to homes, businesses, and agricultural areas. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is exacerbating the situation, bringing additional wet weather to Queensland’s northwest. Seymour Gap recorded 256mm of rain in 24 hours, and Kirby received 244mm.

Winton and its surrounding areas are grappling with road closures and potential isolation due to the floodwaters, with some communities bracing for isolation lasting six to eight weeks. The BoM anticipates that Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily will remain active between Mount Isa and Longreach in the coming days.
