Record-Breaking Floods Submerge Western Australia

 In Event News

Western Australia is currently facing severe flooding, with parts of the Aussie outback receiving a year’s worth of rainfall in just a few days. The vast and typically arid Nullarbor Plain has been hit hard by record-breaking rains. This severe weather event has led to the closure of critical transport routes and disrupted essential freight connections, isolating the state from the rest of the country.

The Western Australia Department of Fire and Emergency Services has alerted residents in Rawlinna, Carnegie, Cocklebiddy, Eyre, and Zanthus to find shelter, stay away from windows, and not drive through floodwaters. Southeastern regions received over 200 millimeters of rain, surpassing March records in the Eucla and Goldfields districts, against an annual average of 260 millimeters.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicts more rain, up to 150 millimeters, for impacted areas soon, driven by a tropical air mass causing heavy rain and storms. This could result in sharp downpours. Eucla and Rawlinna residents should brace for imminent minor flooding, with up to 80 millimeters of rain expected shortly, increasing the threat of severe flash flooding.

Parry Creek Farm near Wyndham is underwater after a 170mm deluge. Simultaneously, a potential cyclone might form off Western Australia’s northwest, with the BOM forecasting a tropical low could become a category two cyclone by Friday, threatening the Pilbara coast this weekend. The cyclone’s exact path is unclear, but it poses a considerable risk to the area.
