Northern Sierra Prepares for Another Round of Heavy Snowfall

In addition to last week’s severe blizzard that left over 7 feet of snow across the parts of Sierra Nevada, another storm targeting the northern Sierra is set to delivery an additional 12 to 24 inches of snow by this week. This storm has winter storm warnings in effect, starting in southern Oregon and Northern California. It will then move on to bring rain to Southern California by the middle of the week.

The earlier blizzard recorded unprecedented snowfall, with up to 87 inches at Donner Peak and wind speeds reaching an incredible 180 to 190 mph at the highest Sierra peaks. The upcoming storm warning indicates heavy snowfall expected at elevations above 4,000 to 5,000 feet, with the tallest peaks seeing up to two feet of new snow. Wind speeds could reach up to 45 mph, causing reduced visibility, significant travel delays, and road closures, with travel strongly advised against by the National Weather Service.
