M 7.5 Earthquake in Papua New Guinea
Monday’s strong M 7.5 earthquake in Papua New Guinea occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 35 kilometers. The epicenter was about 96 kilometers south-west of Mendi, the capital of Southern Highlands province, a town of more than 50,000 people.
The earthquake triggered landslides which cut off several roads, making it more difficult for officials to reach some areas where the damage was most severe. Networks and electricity were also knocked out by the disaster, cutting off communication.
It was the 24th significant earthquake to be reported by the USGS so far this year. The USGS determines if an earthquake is significant by a combination of 3 factors; magnitude, ‘did you feel it response’ and PAGER alert level. (See the full USGS list here.)
