Powerful M 7.3 Earthquake Hits Indonesia

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful M 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia today at 10:20 am (local time). As per the preliminary reports, there has been no significant damage to infrastructure or property so far. The powerful earthquake hit 69 miles north of Maumere, on Indonesia’s eastern coast, Flores Island, with a depth of 11 miles. As per the USGS, the epicenter was in the Flores Sea, north of East Nusa Tenggara province.

According to Indonesia’s Meteorological Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), 15 aftershocks are reported so far, highest one of magnitude 5.6.  The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that the quake or its aftershocks, posed no threat of tsunamis, after the Indonesian authorities lifted their tsunami warning.

In December 1992, Indonesia witnessed a deadly M 7.8 earthquake and tsunami hit, causing huge damage to property and lives.
