M 6.2 Earthquake Hits California’s Northern Coast

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a M 6.2 earthquake rattled the coast of Northern California on Monday – bringing significant shaking. However, as per the preliminary reports, there’s likely minimal damage to the sparsely populated area. The quake occurred just off Cape Mendocino near Humboldt County but was felt as far away as Chico and San Francisco, California. The epicenter was about 210 miles northwest of San Francisco, off a sparsely populated town called Petrolia.

The Humboldt County emergency responders reported some minor damage to buildings. However, that there has been no catastrophic damage to property, infrastructure or lives.

The USGS reported multiple aftershocks post the quake, but tsunami is not likely.
