Excessive Rainfall in China, Typhoon Cempaka and In-fa Updates
Torrential rains lash China’s Zhengzhou City, Henan Province (700 km south-east of Beijing), causing landslides and flooding.
According to the meteorological observatory, a record-breaking 20 centimetres of rainfall occurred within an hour of July 20, causing mass evacuation of about 100,000 residents and at least 12 deaths. Cempaka and In-fa (currently active in the Western Pacific region) could be the reason for this excessive rainfall.
Tropical storm Cempaka over the South China Sea, strengthened into a Typhoon on July 20, before making a landfall in the southwestern part of Hong Kong. It has now turned into a tropical depression, as of July 21.
Typhoon In-fa has achieved a category 2 status as of July 21, and is currently tracking further towards the northwestern Pacific Ocean. It is forecasted to potentially make landfall in Japan, Taiwan and central-eastern parts of China.
