Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Causes Destruction in Philippines Mainland

On October 25, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near the upland town of Dolores in the Philippines. The tremors had a depth of 11 km and were felt as far away as the country’s capital, Manila, which is located more than 205 miles to the south of the epicenter.

The earthquake led to the shutdown of an international airport, the destruction of the Barani Bridge, and damage to a major hospital.

La Paz in Abra experienced intensity 6 or “very strong” shaking, while other areas of Abra, Benguet, Kalinga, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Cagayan observed intensity 5 or “strong” shaking. Parts of Pangasinan, Aurora, and Isabela are also impacted.

Earlier in July this year, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake also struck the northern Philippines, which led to the destruction of land and property.
