Earthquake of Magnitude 7.0 Strikes Northern Philippines
On Wednesday, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines. According to US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 8:43 a.m. local time (8:43 p.m. ET) on northern Luzon, the country’s most populous island. The agency initially gave the earthquake a magnitude of 7.1 before lowering it to 7.0.
With a depth of 10 kilometers, its epicenter was around 8 miles southeast of the small hamlet of Dolores in the province of Abra (6.2 miles).
Workers and residents of Manila, the country’s capital city, evacuated their houses and gathered in the streets as the tremor was felt more than 250 miles away. Though the earthquake also resulted in landslides, fortunately the destruction wasn’t severe.
