More than 50 Earthquakes Rumble Off the Oregon Coast in 24 Hours

 In Event News

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), more than 50 small-to-moderate earthquakes rattled off the coast of Oregon. The quakes, ranging from magnitude 3.5 to 5.8, reportedly started on Tuesday morning and continued through into Wednesday. As per the USGS, the quakes were all clustered between 200-250 miles west of the coastal town of Newport, or further away undetected on land.

One of North America’s most active fault lines, the Blanco Fracture zone, sprung to life on Tuesday following the dozens of quakes that rattled off the Oregon coast, raising concerns for millions of residents.

According to the USGS, there were at least 9 tremors reaching a magnitude between 5.0 to 5.8, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 Km. This is already triple of the annual average, which is three 5.0 (or more) earthquakes per year, since 1980.

As per the US National Tsunami Warning Center, none of these 50 earthquakes off the Oregon coast triggered any tsunami alert.
