Powerful Tornado Struck Andover, Kansas Damaging More Than 1000 Buildings

As a result of severe weather outbreak in Kansas, a destructive tornado struck Andover on Friday evening, leaving a trail of destruction and knocking out power for thousands. According to officials, more than 1,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed including the local YMCA which suffered significant damage. However, there were zero fatalities with four injuries, all considered minor.

According to the preliminary findings from the damage surveys conducted by National Weather Service Office in Wichita, the tornado was an EF-3, but further assessment is expected.

The tornado that hit Andover was part of a larger system of severe weather, that moved through the nation’s midsection late Friday. The storms powered by an area of low pressure which took shape in central Kansas, moved towards Oklahoma and Missouri. According to numerous reports in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri, late Friday, multiple homes and businesses sustained damage as severe thunderstorms erupted.
