The US is facing an arctic blast, with the South preparing for extreme winter weather. Whereas So far,  in the typically warmer South region, the recent weather has been dominated by tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.. 

For the first time this season, a new storm in the region will bring significant snow and ice to areas usually unaccustomed to such severe conditions. This time, we’re witnessing a record-breaking scenario: from the South’s rare snow and ice to Chicago’s deep freeze, which is colder than parts of Siberia and Alaska. 

This substantial snow and ice storm is unusual for the southern region. It’s part of a weather system affecting the country, delivering snow, sleet, and freezing rain from Texas to Virginia. Over 45 million people are under winter storm alerts, with cities like Memphis and Nashville expecting several inches of snow. In Memphis, the Monday morning commute will be perilous as 3 to 7 inches of snow is expected, a significant amount for a city that hasn’t seen measurable snowfall this year.

Meanwhile, Chicago is experiencing a cold so severe that it’s drawing comparisons from some of the coldest places on Earth. With forecast highs of minus-2 degrees and wind chills plummeting to 20-to-30 degrees below zero, the Windy City is enduring temperatures colder than Anchorage, Alaska, and even parts of the Arctic Circle. This extreme cold is part of the larger arctic blast impacting several parts of the country, posing a challenge to residents with its intensity and duration.
