M 6.7 Earthquake Rattles Taiwan

According to the USGS, an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 rattled the coast of Taiwan on Tuesday. The quake struck nearly 45 miles south of the country’s tourist city Hualien. The depth of the quake was around 14 miles. However, tremors were felt over much of the island.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau reported an initial quake of magnitude 5.4 followed by the 6.7-magnitude earthquake. At least, 10 aftershocks of magnitude up to 5.8 have been recorded in the area.

The Taiwanese authorities reported cases of power outages in quake-struck areas, and a bridge in Hualien County collapsed. However, no significant incidents or damage were recorded.

The USGS reported that the quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.
