9:00 AM ET, August 30, 2023 | Hurricane Idalia’s Historic Impact and Widespread Devastation Along Florida’s West Coast: Assess the Impact

Florida’s western coast, battered by Hurricane Idalia’s intense downpour and powerful winds, faced a transformative event. The strongest hurricane to hit the Big Bend region in over a century brought historic water levels and inflicted damage on thousands of homes. The aftermath was marked by substantial flooding, with portions of southeastern North Carolina receiving between 2 and 5 inches of rain. In Florida’s Pasco County alone, 4,000 to 6,000 homes were inundated. As of early Thursday, power outages were significant: about 143,000 homes and businesses in Florida, 126,000 in Georgia, 34,000 in South Carolina, and 18,000 in North Carolina were without power.

Following its Category 3 landfall in Florida, Idalia also lashed parts of Georgia and the Carolinas, leading to coastal flooding and widespread power outages. Now a tropical storm, Idalia triggered dangerous flash flooding in North Carolina and posed ongoing threats, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Idalia’s impact was severe as it struck Florida’s Big Bend area, causing roof damage and flooding due to substantial seawater inundation along the state’s western coastline. Evacuations were conducted to mitigate the storm surge, which resulted in record-high water levels across Tampa Bay and the Big Bend. Power lines were downed, and flooding was reported in Georgia, South Carolina (including Charleston), and North Carolina.

Idalia’s center was situated southwest of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. The storm was projected to track just offshore of North Carolina’s coast later on Thursday.

Charleston Harbor in South Carolina experienced water levels exceeding 9 feet, the fifth-highest recorded, while Florida’s Cedar Key, East Bay Tampa, Clearwater Beach, and St. Petersburg saw unprecedented storm surges.

9:00 AM ET, August 30, 2023 | Category 3 Hurricane Idalia Strikes Florida’s Gulf Coast with Unprecedented Force: Assess the Impact

Hurricane Idalia has made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend with dangerous Category 3 strength, causing a deadly storm surge and extremely strong winds not observed in that Gulf Coast area for 125 years. Making landfall at Keaton Beach in the Big Bend area, it’s now progressing ominously across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. In Cedar Key, a vulnerable island city, the storm surge shattered water level records with 8 to 9 feet of flooding.

The water level is rising rapidly and is predicted to reach halfway up the second floor of an average building. With once-in-a-lifetime damaging winds and a life-threatening storm surge up to 16 feet, Idalia’s devastating effects are far-reaching, leading to worsening conditions such as flooding in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Fort Myers Beach due to rising ocean water and heavy rainfall.
