Severe Rains Causes Flash Floods Threats in Southwest Sydney

 In Event News

On Sunday, thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate Southwest Sydney due to life threatening conditions caused by torrential rains and damaging winds.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, more than 8 inched of rain was recorded over many areas, whereas in some areas this number jumped to 13 inches of rain. The heavy rains raised the water level causing Sydney’s Warragamba dam to overflow at 2AM (local time), which was earlier than expected. This has caused a state of emergency in the region as the residents are facing dangers on multiple fronts – flash flooding, riverine flooding, landslides and coastal erosion.

The rain is expected to intensify in the next 24 hours on the coast between Newcastle to Batemans Bay in New South Wales, leading to intense flash flooding and dangerous landslides.
