Major Flooding Continues in New South Wales, Australia

 In Event News

Heavy rainfall has eased in New South Wales, but major flooding continues at Grafton, Lismore, Coraki, Bungawalbin and Woodburn. The State Emergency Service (SES) has issued 20 evacuation orders, impacting more than 30, 000 residents. Additionally, The Bureau of Meteorology also issued flood and hazardous surf warnings across the state. Around 6000 homes and businesses are facing power outage due to the flooding.

On Thursday, the entire coast of Australia’s most populous state braced for high waves and dangerous winds as a low pressure system that left towns flooded moved offshore. The Wilsons River that runs through regional centre Lismore had peaked at 37.4 feet (11.4 metres), lower than the 39 feet (12 metres).

The main threat included high tide, coastal erosion along with inundation of low-lying areas, particularly for properties near the beach.

So far, two residents have been confirmed dead, while few others are missing in floodwaters at Lismore.
