Deadly M6.3 Afghanistan Earthquake Wrecked 1320 Properties: Actionable Insights on EigenPrism

On Sunday, a powerful M 6.3 earthquake struck the densely populated neighborhood of Herat in western Afghanistan. The epicenter was approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Herat city in Afghanistan’s third-largest province. 

This was one of the worst earthquakes to hit the nation in 20 years, and the initial tremors were felt in neighboring provinces, Badghis and Farah, and were followed by strong aftershocks. The event caused more than 2,053 fatalities, over 1,240 injuries, and the full or partial destruction of 1,320 houses. The death toll is likely to escalate. The UN said that Mahal Wadakah was the most severely impacted village, reporting at least 20 deaths there. Other significantly affected areas include Dasht Hows, Bahadorzai, Zoryan, and Koshkak, as per the UN’s findings. 

In addition, approximately 300 families, totaling around 2,100 people, have been displaced to Herat City, they are currently sheltering in abandoned structures.
