Catastrophic Flooding in Kentucky Causes Massive Damage to Property

On Thursday, widespread flooding in eastern Kentucky wreaked havoc on the lives of the residents and caused massive disaster to homes, property and infrastructure. Following the heavy overnight rains and the scale of the disaster, the governor of Kentucky predicts the inundation to be one of the most significant, deadly floods in the history of the state.

As per the National Weather Service, portions of Kentucky around the hazard area received more than 9 inches of rain from Wednesday into Thursday morning. The rain in eastern Kentucky overwhelmed creeks, steams and ground already saturated from previous rain.

The rains and flooding caused significant damage to property in the state’s slice of central Appalachia. Major flooding left residents trapped on rooftops and entire communities under water. Dozens of roads are blocked by debris, and hundreds of people have been rescued.

Additional amounts of rainfall, approximately over an inch, are expected through Friday evening, Flood warnings in portions of eastern Kentucky have been extended till Monday evening.
