Hurricane Otis Weakens After Powerful Category 5 Landfall in Acapulco, Mexico: Get Actionable Insights on EigenPrism
Hurricane Otis, initially a Category 5 storm, has now diminished to a Category 4 hurricane after making landfall near Acapulco, Mexico. This dramatic shift in intensity raised concerns about the potential for severe damage to Mexico’s southern coastline, as the storm brought with it destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges.
Otis hit the Mexican coast with sustained winds of 165 mph. However, within a short span of time, its maximum sustained winds dropped to 130 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending up to 30 miles from the storm’s center.
Currently, the hurricane is situated about 25 miles north-northwest of Acapulco. It is anticipated that Otis will rapidly weaken as it moves further inland and encounters the elevated terrain of southern Mexico. Eventually, the storm is expected to dissipate by Wednesday night.
A hurricane warning remains in effect for the coastal region stretching from Punta Maldonado to Zihuatanejo.
