Powerful Tornado Rips through Gaylord, Michigan

The governor declared a state of emergency for areas in Northern Michigan town, after a powerful tornado ripped roofs off buildings and flipped cars on Friday. The twister – with maximum winds of 150 mph tore through the town of Gaylord – caused ‘catastrophic’ damage with many houses completely destroyed or damaged. As per the reports, around 44 people are injured and 2 are dead. The tornado touched down in the busy part of the city – impacting local businesses and other infrastructure. More than 50 cars were reportedly damaged.

As per the preliminary assessment by the NWS, the tornado was rated an EF-3. The twister hit west of the city near Interstate 75 and moved east-northeast. More than 6000 homes and businesses in Otsego County faced power outages. 

According to the US Census Bureau, Gaylord and Otsego County roughly has 25000 residents. As per the locals, it is rare to get a tornado in northern Michigan. On an average,  Michigan records around 25 tornadoes per year.
