Severe Storms in East US Leave Trail of Devastation and Power Outages: Actionable Insights on EigenPrism

Nearly 400,000 homes and businesses were without electricity early on Tuesday as a result of severe thunderstorms. The day before, tornadoes and hail tore through much of the Eastern US.

In North Carolina, over 140,000 utility customers were grappling with power loss, while Pennsylvania reported more than 103,000 outages, according to data from PowerOutage.us. Similar situations were observed in Maryland and Georgia, where over 70,000 and 40,000 outages were recorded respectively. The storms caused structural damage, in addition to fallen trees and powerlines. On Monday morning, Paoli, Indiana experienced forceful winds that dislodged roofs from buildings, twisted traffic signs and left debris scattered across roadways.

Numerous instances of large hail measuring 2 inches or more were documented in Virginia, including a remarkable report of grapefruit-sized hail (4.75 inches) in Caroline County. Over 8,600 national and international flights encountered delays, while more than 1,700 flights were canceled.

The Storm Prediction Center has identified a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms on Tuesday in certain parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, as well as sections of Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas.

Tornado Damage in Dubois and Orange Counties, Indiana

On Monday, EF-1 tornado damage hit Dubois and Orange counties in Indiana. The cause of the damage, whether from a single tornado or multiple, remained uncertain as per the weather service. Orange County, Indiana, declared an emergency due to storm damage, and officials cautioned about potential prolonged power restoration efforts.
