Deadly Earthquake Strikes Southern Ecuador and Northern Peru: Actionable Insights Available

On Saturday, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck the southern region of Ecuador and northern Peru. The quake has caused the deaths of at least 15 people, while others have been trapped beneath the debris. The epicenter was about 50 miles south of Guayaquil, the second-largest city in Ecuador, just off the Pacific coast. However, the quake’s effects were felt across Peru, from its northern border with Ecuador to the central Pacific coast.

Guayaquilis around 170 miles southwest of Quito, the country’s capital, is , where authorities have reported damage to homes and structures, including cracked and collapsed walls. As a result, the government of Guayaquil, which is home to more than 3 million people, ordered the closing of three traffic tunnels.
