4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Southern California

 In Event News

A magnitude-4.6 earthquake caused widespread shaking across Southern California early Friday afternoon. The quake, centered about 7 miles northwest of Malibu in the Santa Monica Mountains, was followed by more than a dozen aftershocks, with the largest being magnitudes 3.0 and 2.7.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones noted the quake’s robust aftershock sequence and mentioned the diminishing likelihood of it being a foreshock to a larger event over time. The earthquake was felt from the coasts of LA, Orange, and Ventura counties to inland areas like the San Fernando Valley, downtown LA, Riverside, Irvine, and Anaheim, potentially affecting up to 12 million people.

Some parts of north San Diego County also experienced weak to light shaking. Despite the significant jolt, there were no immediate reports of significant damage. On the same day, a magnitude-5.7 earthquake hit Hawaii’s Big Island, felt as far as 200 miles away in Honolulu, Oahu. This event highlights the broad earthquake risks across the Pacific, unrelated to Southern California’s seismic activity.
